Strep Throat

Strep throat is a contagious infection caused by the Group A beta hemolytic streptococcal bacteria. Diagnosis may be made by a throat culture. Strep throat requires a full ten days of antibiotic treatment.

Symptoms

  • Red, sore throat
  • Fever above 100°F
  • May have exudate (exuded substance) on tonsil area

Treatment

  • A FULL TEN DAYS of antibiotics taken as directed
  • Gargle with salt water (1/3 teaspoon in 8 ounces of warm water) every 2-3 hours
  • Drink plenty of fluids — eight or more glasses of water, juice, or kool-aid daily
  • Use over-the-counter throat lozenges or spray for temporary relief you may take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen every 6-8 hours for pain and fever relief
  • After 5 days of antibiotics, use a new toothbrush and wash any common cups or glasses that you use.
  • Return 24-48 hours after completion of antibiotics if you still have any symptoms
